Trend Tested - Gothic Lip / Minimal Eye

by Kate O'Reilly

I've been trying out various catwalk makeup trends for my monthly makeup column in Xpose Magazine. Here is one of my favorites; the one focus gothic lip trend from last Autumn/Winter. In my lovely moody photo I am wearing Rimmel 107, cheap and gorgeous!

I‘m not one for makeup rules, but a good guide to keeping it classy is to either emphasize your eyes or your lips. So, if you’re not going to brave my false lash instructions this holiday season, why not wow the crowd with a strong lip colour instead! Uber minimalist makeup teamed with bold lips always creates a reaction at fashion week and A/W 2012 saw a strong presence of gothic colours, from glowing vermillion at Gucci to muddy brown at Emilio Pucci (unintended rhyme!). The trick is to keep eyes nearly completely bare and let your lips do the talking (intended pun…). I tested out colour 107 from Kate Moss’s collection of matte lipsticks for Rimmel and I am well impressed with the entire range. The colours cover all bases for my kit (nude, pink, coral, red and burgundy) and the on trend matte texture delivers intense velvety colour without drying the lips. I absolutely loved rocking out dark lips for a change and it’s fantastic war paint for days when you need maximum impact with minimal effort. It made me think of advice I’d heard from my makeup mentor who always wore strong lipstick to important business meetings to draw focus to her mouth and give her a well-needed break from eye contact! I had a strut in my step all day, kind of like wearing a pair of killer heals but without the pain. I’m officially a lipstick convert.

The Great Gatsby 1974

by Kate O'Reilly in

Baz Luhrmann's new version of The Great Gatsby is released tomorrow and although I'm looking forward to it, I'm not expecting much. Auld Baz' work is usually more style over substance and as a long ago fan of the book I'm sure if won't do F. Scott Fitzgerald's critique of consumerism much justice. The costumes and sets, however, are going to be FANTASTIC! It's just like the original 1974 movie with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow made back in the early days of retro nostalgia. Those dudes weren't very good at plot development or under riding themes either but they sure made a pretty picture. So to celebrate, here are some of my favorite images from the original movie.

Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge

by Kate O'Reilly in

Models and clients are a bit fed up after the winter blizzards so I'm doing as much as I can to revive their tired skin. Face massages, serums and highlighter work wonders but nothing says Spring Time like softly flushed cheeks. Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge is my favorite for a lasting but natural finish. "Powder Pink" gives a rosey glow to pale skin, "Calypso Coral" lifts a tan and "Rasberry" warms up dark skin. #TIP: For an instant facelift, smile and aim for the chubbiest part of your cheek, below the outer corner of the eye.
