It's hard to imagine anything more classic than mascara, but just like the little black dress, it has gone through many different incarnations since its humble beginnings. The legend goes like this; After watching his sister Maybel apply a mixture of ash and Vaseline to her lashes, a young man hit on an idea. He created a pancake of coal and petroleum jelly that came with a mini toothbrush and Maybelline was born!
Since then mascara has evolved from the messy cakes of the 1930s to toothpaste tubes and grooved metal rods in the 50s until the invention of the dramatically more useful spiral brushes that saw mascara's increasing success and onwards to the ever more complicated laser cut and silicone brushes that we find today.
With so many products claiming to be the next big thing I'm always sceptical of a new mascara until I try it, but then sometimes a game changer comes along. Estee Lauder's Little Black Primer makes you rethink what you want from your mascara in the first place. Worn alone it's perfect for those who prefer a lighter effect, a sheer black liquid that gives you glossy tinted separated lashes with not a gloop in sight. Wear it as a primer underneath your mascara to build volume without the grey clunky effect of white mascara primers. And the pièce de résistance; wear it over your mascara as a waterproof topcoat. I loved it so much that I gave it to my sister, who is obsessed with combing through her lashes. Now there's sisterly love!
